From Ice Age to Cretaceous Period Battle

A couple of years ago, we had lost power for a couple of days. It is amazing just how dependent that we have become on electricity to provide all of those creature comforts that we all seem to have taken for granted. We did however have a generator since we had to buy one during the great ice storm of 2009. We were with out power for over a week with that storm- while some in neighboring towns went without for two weeks.  At that time, we were thinking a new Ice Age was soon upon us.

Basically, we ran the generator for a couple of hours early in the morning and at 5:00 PM so that we could get the house up to temperature and prepare our meals.  I had no intention of running my Power Mac and our LCD TV on it. The weather was unseasonably warm with plentiful sunshine. I was comfortable with a heavy sweater and a blanket over my legs. As my computer wasn't available for use during the work day, I literally went back to the drawing board. Because I pretty much do everything digitally these days, It had been quite a few years since I had really devoted any serious time sketching and drawing on real paper using actual pencils and pens. I knew that this was going to be fun because I had no deadlines looming at this time.  I was inspired to just sketch, so I just put pencil to paper and started doodling. Of course, I just had to render some dinos, which were pretty much my favorite subject matter when I was a kid.
T Rex vs Triceratops
T Rex vs Triceratops Line Drawing
Last week I scanned those sketches from a couple years back and reworked them in Photoshop- making some edits and adding in the color. The dinosaur illustration above depicts a classic confrontation between Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex. I imagined a scene having taken place at the dawn of the Cretaceous Period.  In this epic battle, the three horn impales sharp tooth. The T Rex is mortally wounded and the rogue Triceratops goes on to live another day.  After completing the art, I added the title 'Epoch' and posted the designs on a couple of Mudge Studios Pod shops. There, you'll see a variety of Dinosaur t-shirts, stickers, posters, refrigerator magnets and other novelties. I'll post some links to these dino items below.

Free Woolly Mammoth Print b
y Mudge Studios: "Depicted is a rogue woolly mammoth as it perseveres through the relentless snow, sleet, wind during the ice age only to become yet another extinct species of yesteryear's Megafauna. Nothing was able to save the Woolly Mammoth back then, but today may be all together a whole different story. Scientists are once again talking about the potential to clone a woolly mammoth- should living cells be found among the beautifully preserved frozen mammoths that were recently discovered during the 2012 Yana Expedition in Siberia. Evidently they found some beautifully preserved mammoth fur and bone, which could hold the key to a successful woolly mammoth cloning. If those intact cells containing their nucleuses are found to be living, then a living mammoth clone could very well be created- using a Japanese technique involving the insertion of woolly mammoth DNA into an elephant embryo. Only time and testing will determine whether the Expedition has truly uncovered a viable resource for such an endeavor. Free Woolly!"

The Awesome Dino Art of Charles R. Knight

Brontosaurus 1897
By Charles R Knight [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons
The dinosaur art of one the great pioneers of Paleoartist Charles R. Knight has awed me and influenced my dinosaur art since I was a young child. The iconic painting of the Brontosaurus above is one of the first examples of dinosaur art that stirred my youthful imagination and transported me back in time into the world of the terrible lizards . Like most of images that Charles R. Knight had produced during his prolific career, this classic image has been etched into the archives of my mind for over four decades now!

Charles R. Knights was a New York Artist who became famous for his spectacular paintings of dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals that can be seen or found in many publications and in several museums across the country. Charles attended the Metropolitan Art School at a very young age on route to becoming a very successful commercial artist. Knight's fascination with all things wildlife and nature often brought him to the American Museum of History. This activity eventually caught the eye of Dr. Jacob Wortman. Knight would land his big break when the Museum commissioned him to create some watercolors for the Museum's fossil halls. The series was a great success which would lay the foundation for a very long lasting relationship with the American Museum of History.

Soon, Knight's work caught the attention of other prominent museums like Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Chicagos' Field Museum of Natural History, The Smithsonian, The Carnegie Museums and several Zoos such as The Bronx Zoo, etc. Knight also contributed to National geographic, did freelance illustration for several books and magazines as well as lecturing on the topic of prehistoric life across the states.

Thank you Charles R. Knight for your dedicated contribution to this most interesting artform, currently known as Paleoart!
